We’re lucky to live fairly close to just some of the most gorgeous views Idaho has to offer. And on a beautiful day like yesterday, we couldn’t stay inside.
We loaded up the Yamaha YXZ1000R and the new Kawasaki Teryx 4x4 and headed to Mackay, ID, to meet with Rally in the Pines organizers and to preview the ride that Dirt Toys Magazine will be leading at the Rally in a few short weeks on July 7-10.
Our ride began at the fairgrounds in Mackay. We then headed northeast out of town, passed through Pass Creek Canyon and across the open rangeland—on trails—as we made our way to the Long Lost Creek Trail deep in the Lost River Range. We were treated with stunning views of high rocky mountain peaks and the vibrant green of the rangeland and high desert. The weather was gorgeous with a clear blue sky except for a few wispy clouds and the hot sun beating down.
Senior Editor Steve Janes even found a minute to break out his fishing pole and proved that the Kawasaki Teryx 4x4 is a reliable machine for the successful fisherman. Successful being a relative term.
This was our maiden voyage with the 2016 Teryx as we just picked up the new vehicle a few days ago. It performed great. Very decent in the big bumps and over the few rocks we encountered. Great gas mileage, too. We went about 95 miles and the gas gauge showed nearly a half-tank left. The ride is comfortable and the seats only add to the ride. The cockpit is roomy and comfortable and we were really liking all the storage, including the bins right behind the driver/passenger seats. We stuff a lot of gear in those bins.
For a GoPro video of our ride yesterday, see our Facebook page.
With our preview of the trail, we’re more excited than ever to be part of the Rally in the Pines. There are a full three and a half days of action and meals planned with more new guided rides this year and live entertainment.
Of course, if you prefer, you have the option to opt out of the guided rides and go alone. Maps and trail information will be provided.
