Lehi (Utah) OKs Street-Legal Utility Vehicles

Lehi, UT - Granny can zip around Lehi City legally in a utility-type vehicle to get groceries and go to the senior center and elected officials will no longer be skirting around the law when they drive their golf carts in the Round-Up Parades.

The Lehi City Council fixed all that when it approved a new ordinance presented by Lehi police on July 10 permitting street legal all-terrain vehicles and UTVs within city limits except on major corridors having more than two lanes such as Main Street, Pioneer Crossing, Timpanogos Highway, 2100 North and Redwood Road.

Drivers of UTVs can cross those major thoroughfares at intersections but would not be allowed to navigate destinations on those roads.

"Right now we have people using them in the streets anyways, so this makes it legal," Councilwoman Kay Collins said.

Collins said she would have to see what she needed to do to soup up her UTV to drive it legally.

"I have a golf cart that is almost street legal. It's the one we use in the parades," she said. "My husband bought it."

And then she giggles.

Will Collins be using the cart to run to school or to get groceries?

"No, no, no, no, no," Collins said. "Although it would be nice to go to the Grace house and get cakes and things from Sister Grace. It would be nice be able to run around the neighborhood in it but right now I think they do need blinkers and things."

Councilman Johnny Revill said he has a couple of neighbors who have ATVs that they use mostly for recreation but others use them on farms and ranches or for business. He said he doesn't want residents to confuse ATVs such as four-wheelers as being legal now on the streets of Lehi.

"It's a street-safe vehicle, it's not ATV, it's a UTV," Revill said. "There are Kawasaki Mules, Polaris RZR, things like that, so they are all-terrain vehicles but they can street legalize them with lights, roll bars doors."
