Greenville, Maine
- All the selectmen expressed some concern that a new all-terrain vehicle trail
would create a flood of unlicensed and uninsured ATV traffic in town.
But the board voted 3-1 on Dec.
5, with one abstention, to approve a new route from the Moosehead Riders
clubhouse on Scammon Road
to the Wilson Stream Bridge
on a one-year trial basis.
Despite the uncertainty of how
the additional ATV traffic would affect road traffic, Selectmen Bruce Wyman,
Craig Watt and Richard Peat voted in favor of the proposal while Bonnie DuBien
voted against it and Bruce Hanson abstained.
"They all had concerns about
the additional ATV traffic, but it did pass. So we'll see how it works for one
year," Town Manager Gary Lamb said of the board's decision.
Lamb expects the new trail to
open later than other trails will in Greenville
next spring. The other trails open May 15, but Lamb believes the new trail's
ground won't be ready for use until later that month.
The selectmen also approved a
one-year snowmobile trail-grooming contract with Greenville ITS Grooming. The business is
operated by summer residents John and Lauri Waitkus, who have groomed the
nearly 76 miles of trails for several years. The firm will receive $75,000 to
perform the task.
