ISU Team Takes School's First Vehicle To SAE

A couple of Dirt Toys issues back, we told you about three Idaho State University engineering students—Bobby Miklos, Richard England and Cody Martin—who were working to be their school’s first participants in the SAE Baja Design Series competition.

According to the SAE website, the concept of the competition is to prepare engineering students for the job market where they have to work together to design vehicles for production. Each team entered is responsible for designing, fundraising, building and competing in the vehicle they created.

Starting from scratch last fall, the ISU team designed and constructed a one-seat ATV and in May took the vehicle to Bellingham, WA, to compete. With virtually no initial funding, the three students promoted themselves to local and regional businesses and were able to raise enough money to build their vehicle and get it to Washington to compete.

The team is pleased with the work they’ve done and the groundwork they’ve laid for future engineering students at Idaho State.

“The guys are in a great spot for next year,” said Miklos. “[They’re] starting with a running car and just have to work on refining it over the next year, and the support for the program has grown significantly as well.”
