In Depth: 2016 Can-Am Outlander 6x6 Family

July 2015 Powersport News

Whether it’s for extreme work or recreation, Can-Am has the most diverse 6x6 and ATV lineup in the industry. All Outlander 6x6 vehicles have an additional set of rear wheels, a 3,000-pound (1,360 kg) Warn winch, an exclusive Double Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI2) rear suspension (complete with a quick-release sway bar), extra low L gear for work, a Dual-Level cargo box with modular accessories, the largest towing capacity of any Can-Am ATV and much more.

For getting the job done, in the toughest of conditions, there’s nothing like the Outlander 6x6 XT 1000 and Outlander 6x6 XT 650. Like the rest of the Can-Am ATV lineup, the Outlander 6x6 vehicles now have the revised one-year (1,500 km/932 miles) break-in maintenance schedule.

Outlander 6x6 XT 1000

Performance

  • 82-hp Rotax V-Twin 1000 - An 80-degree 976cc liquid-cooled Rotax V-Twin powerplant is at the core of the Outlander 6x6 XT 1000 and produces an impressive 82 hp. With a superb power-to-weight ratio, 65.1 lbs.-ft. of torque and electronic fuel injection (46 mm throttle body), the single overhead cam engine is as efficient and strong. Regardless of temperature or altitude, EFI ensures optimal performance from the engine at all times. Despite its hearty performance levels, the eight-valve engine remains controllable and offers useable power for a wide array of riders and situations.
  • UPDATED CVT transmission with extra-low L gear - The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) means no shifting is required. The system includes standard engine braking, high, low, park, neutral and reverse. The CVT housing has 13 bolts to ensure a proper seal and also includes an integrated drain plug. Returning in 2016, the extra low-gear has a 32 percent lower ratio than a regular Outlander, offering an unmatched comfort for low-speed riding and an exceptional and smooth traction when pulling heavy loads.
  • Relocated air intakes - The engine’s air intake and CVT inlets have been positioned as high as possible on the Outlander 6x6 to improve breathing while navigating wet and muddy conditions.
  • Dual-room, no-tools air box - A no-tools air box is placed at a higher and more centralized location for filtering and processing air. A dual-room air filtration design captures dirty air in one portion of the box and clean air in another section before it sends the air to the engine. A higher air intake ensures performance in mud and water.
  • Large radiator - The large, efficient radiator offers up to 27 kW of cooling capacity to keep the engine running cool for optimal performance.

Handling

  • Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) - Calibrated specifically for aggressive trail riding and racing, the Tri-Mode DPS system features three modes (MIN, MED and MAX), allowing riders to select the desired amount of steering assist for the terrain and conditions.
  • 12-inch cast-aluminum wheels - The stylish 12-inch, machined cast-aluminum wheels have a computer-optimized configuration that increases strength in critical areas while removing unnecessary weight from other sections of the wheels.
  • Double Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI2) rear suspension - The Outlander 6x6 vehicles use an industry-exclusive, four-wheel independent rear suspension that eliminates scrub and camber changes. The wheels pivot up and down rather than in a butterfly motion. This ensures the vehicle moves only in the direction you point it and is designed to improve traction and optimize transfer of power to the ground. Offering a five-way preload adjustable shocks and 9.3 inches (23.6 cm) of suspension travel, it can soak up rough terrain while keeping the rider comfortable and focused on the trail.
  • Visco-Lok QE auto-locking front differential - For situations that require optimal traction and as much contact with the terrain at hand, the Outlander 6x6 offers both 4x6 and 6x6 with its Visco-Lok QE. In 4x6 mode, all four rear wheels provide traction. Once 6x6 is selected, the system intelligently transfers power from the slipping front wheel to the opposing wheel with traction and is not hampered by speed or rev limiters. The system progressively and automatically locks and requires no additional buttons to push or levers to hold.
  • Double A-arm front suspension with dive-control geometry - The front suspension features a dive-control, a short spindle, along with anti-kickback geometry to provide better steering. Front-end suspension travel is 9 inches (22.9 cm) for improved trail comfort. Five-way preload shocks offer more than an inch of additional suspension travel.
  • 11-inch ground clearance - When combined with its impressive suspension travel, Visco-Lok QE and true 6x6 capabilities, the 11-inch ground clearance on the Outlander 6x6 makes conquering rugged terrain a snap.
  • Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) G2 Frame - The Outlander 6x6 uses the industry-exclusive Surround Spar Technology (SST) second-generation frame. Featuring an 82-inch wheelbase, the frame offers delicate balance of structural integrity, durability and handling.
  • Quick-release sway bar - With its integrated Quick-Release Sway Bar, owners can adjust the amount of articulation from the rear TTI to improve the ride for both heavy loads or when unloaded.
  • 214 mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers - The 2016 Outlander 6x6 XT features four outboard 214mm hydraulic disc brakes with twin-piston calipers, front and rear, for superior stopping power.
  • 26-inch Carlisle ACT Radial tires - Proven 26-inch ACT Radial tires from Carlisle provide a smoother ride and better shock absorption.
  • Standard skid plate - The high-strength skid plate is made from proven materials and is designed for supreme protection and has the ability to slide over certain obstacles.

Rider-Focused Design

  • NEW Revised maintenance break-in - The break-in maintenance requirement is no longer necessary on the Outlander 6x6 vehicles, saving consumers time and money in the long run. The break-in has been revised to one year (1,500 km/932 miles) from 10 hours (300 km/186 miles).
  • Easy-to-use maintenance center - Easily accessible and out of the elements under the seat, a centralized maintenance area offers easier access and improved protection. The rear brake fluid reservoir, solenoid starter, battery and relays are also conveniently located under the seat.
  • Dual-Level cargo box with modular accessories - This unique cargo box features dual storage levels, 700 lbs. (318 kg) of total capacity and tilt-assist dumping. It can adapt to your needs with its standard side panels that are easily removable allowing it to transform to a flatbed in seconds or with the available options like the enclosed storage, log bars, tailgate extension and more.
  • 3,000-pound Warn winch – Warn is a highly-respected name in the off-road industry and the Outlander 6x6 XT features a 3,000-lb. (1,360 kg) Warn winch with roller fairlead.
  • Multi-function front rack with LinQ quick-attach accessory system - The rack, with a 100-lb. (45 kg) capacity, has an anti-skid surface and elevated ridges to keep gear in position. Multiple tie-down points, holes and predetermined “cutouts” for LinQ accessories makes for a convenient setup. Add available rack extension or modular storage bags in seconds.
  • Heavy-duty front bumper - For an edgier and more rugged trim, the XT models include a heavy-duty front bumper.
  • 625-W magneto - The Outlander 6x6 XT sports the most powerful magneto in the industry, at 625 watts, which means more amps for powering accessories.
  • 1,650-lb. towing capacity - Fully equipped to move a load, the Outlander 6x6 has a 2-in. (5 cm) receiver hitch and a 1,650-lb. (750 kg) towing capacity that comes standard.
  • 230-W headlights - The most lighting output of any ATV in the industry, these headlights honor the Can-Am heritage while offering enhanced visibility for trail riding. On high beam, the twin 60-W projectors and dual 55-W reflectors give the Outlander 230 W of visual clarity.
  • Large 5.4-gallon (20.5L) fuel tank - The Outlander has a capacity of 5.4 gallons (20.5 liters), which means one can ride longer and work harder.
  • Multi-function digital gauge – The easy-to-read multi-function gauge is equipped with a digital information center, including a speedometer, tachometer, odometer, trip meter, gear position, hour meter, engine hour meter, temperature and engine lights, fuel gauge, 6x6 indicator and clock.
  • D.E.S.S. (Digitally Encoded Security System) - D.E.S.S. is the ATV industry’s lone factory-installed anti-theft device. The system utilizes electronic key codes that are required to match each specific ATV’s ECU.
  • Handlebar wind deflectors - Wind deflectors provide improved protection from brush and cold weather and also offer a distinguished look.
  • Stylish design - The 2016 Outlander 6x6 XT 1000 features a style that mimics the four-wheeled Outlander ATVs and could be described as aggressive sophistication. Its muscular facade includes a more seamless makeup and less apparent fasteners for a cleaner look.
  • NEW Colors available - The Outlander 6x6 XT 1000 is adorned in either Yellow or Light Grey colorations.
