Washington – Illegal all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes on city streets are an ongoing problem in the District and Prince George’s County and DC Councilmember Yvette Alexander wants to do something about it.
On Tuesday, Alexander introduced the ATV Gasoline Prohibition Amendment Act of 2016.
The proposed legislation would make it illegal for gas stations in the District to sell any fuel meant for an ATV or dirt bike. Baltimore and the state of Maryland have similar laws already in place.
“These ATVs have taken over the roads and people fear them,” Alexander told FOX 5. “They terrorize our neighborhoods, and people are fed up.”
Owners of gas stations that violate the proposed law would face a misdemeanor penalty carrying a maximum fine of $1,000, 90 days in jail—or both.
Alexander’s proposal must first make its way through committee. If the legislation passes, the full council will then vote on the measure.
