(Dirt Toys Magazine ED—This is the final installment covering Can-Am ATV models, focusing mostly on the MAX family.)
The 2019 Can-Am Outlander all-terrain vehicles have a brand-new suspension, offering perfected handling, enhanced stability and additional comfort for an entirely new riding experience. Additional performance gains, new pricing in the USA and Canada, as well as a refreshed family appearance were added to appease modern recreational riders who seek an all-capable ATVs.
The 2019 Can-Am Outlander 1000R (and MAX models) features a commanding 91 hp Rotax V-Twin, the most powerful production ATV ever built. A new intelligent Throttle Control (iTC) system, with three driving modes (Sport, Standard and Work), supplies precise skillfulness in unpredictable terrain. A brand-new, purpose-built and recalibrated suspension with front arched A-arms, front sway bar and Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension provides additional width and travel for precision handling, extra comfort and enhanced control on all 650cc and up Outlander models and every Renegade ATV. More than a dozen updates, including a refreshed exterior appearance and an industry-leading 1,650-pound (750 kg) tow rating deliver immediate benefit to riders, heightening any off-road adventure.
Both the Outlander 650 and 850 ATVs received the same family updates, but now redefine their categories in terms of accessibility, retailing for $8,399 ($400 less than in 2018) and $8,999 ($750 less than 2018) in the USA, respectively. These ATVs stand out against their peers because they possess class-leading power, exceptional quality and reliable performance for which Can-Am is known. They are also more affordable than ever.
Restyling includes a new front grille that takes cues from the Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicle family, fresh aluminum bumper corners, specific wheel packages and the addition of mudguards. Also, the Can-Am ATV family welcomes a total of eight new color offerings for 2019, adding an attractive appearance to match the vehicle’s capabilities and remarkable power.
The Outlander 6x6 ATV family now includes many of the 2019 Can-Am ATV family updates, including the new suspension, enhanced stability and styling, as well as a longer 90-inch (228.6 cm) wheelbase for ample comfort and control. Can-Am Outlander ATVs are built around the industry-exclusive chassis and suspension designs, and share many of the same specifications, engineering and components aside from their engine displacement levels, chassis lengths and packages-specific features.

- Water-resistant rear storage box
A huge 5.7 gallon (21.4-liter) rear storage box offers exceptional cargo capacity and is located beneath the rear cargo rack. The more convenient location means riders can access the water-resistant, sealed storage box even when the rear cargo rack is loaded.
- Radio Frequency (RF) Digitally Encoded Security System (D.E.S.S.)
The RF D.E.S.S. requires a specific key to operate the vehicle. Each all-terrain vehicle includes both a performance key and regular key. Can-Am is the only manufacturer to offer a factory-installed anti-theft device as standard equipment.

The transition literally takes just seconds and eliminates the touring look and feel when riding alone. The fact that the passenger handholds are attached to the seat means they don’t inhibit rider movement or take up rear rack space. The CRS system includes a small storage box that uses the LinQ system and removes the void when the passenger seat is removed. A rear optional cargo box is also available from PAC.

When it comes to tackling hard chores and difficult terrain, nothing can match the abilities of the Outlander MAX 6x6 vehicles, but for 2019 the talented workhorses are even more convenient thanks to the new convertible 2-up seating design like the Outlander MAX ATVs. Along with the all-new suspension system improvements from the Outlander ATV family, the Outlander MAX 6x6 vehicles now have a 90-inch (228.6 cm) wheelbase to accommodate a passenger, but also create improved surefootedness and handling.

CAN-AM OUTLANDER MAX 6X6 XT 1000
Performance
- 82hp Rotax V-Twin 1000
An 80 degree 976cc liquid-cooled Rotax V-Twin powerplant is at the core of the Outlander MAX 6x6 XT 1000 and produces an impressive 82 hp. With a superb power-to-weight ratio and electronic fuel injection (46 mm throttle body), the DOHC engine is efficient and strong. Regardless of temperature or altitude, EFI ensures optimal performance from the engine at all times. Despite its hearty performance levels, the eight-valve engine remains controllable and offers useable power for a wide array of riders and situations.
- CVT transmission with extra-low L gear
The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) means no shifting is required. The system includes standard engine braking, high, low, park, neutral and reverse. The CVT housing has 13 bolts to ensure a proper seal and also includes an integrated drain plug. The extra-low L gear provides unmatched comfort for low-speed riding and an exceptional and smooth traction when pulling heavy loads.
- Relocated air intakes
The engine’s air intake and CVT inlets have been positioned as high as possible on the Outlander 6x6 1000 to improve breathing while navigating wet and muddy conditions.
Handling
- Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)
The Tri-Mode DPS system features three modes (MIN, MED and MAX), allowing riders to select the desired amount of steering assist to adjust to the terrain requirements and to his riding style. All modes offer less assist at high speed to keep maximum steering feel to the rider and more assist at low speed to reduce steering effort.

For situations that require optimal traction and as much contact with the terrain at hand, the Outlander MAX 6x6 offers both 4x6 and 6x6 with its Visco-Lok QE. In 4x6 mode, all four rear wheels provide traction. Once 6x6 is selected, the system intelligently transfers power from the slipping front wheel to the opposing wheel with traction and is not hampered by speed or rev limiters. The system progressively and automatically locks and requires no additional buttons to push or levers to hold.
- NEW 14-inch cast-aluminum wheels
New, stylish 14-inch (35.6 cm) cast-aluminum wheels have a computer-optimized configuration that increases strength in critical areas while removing unnecessary weight from other sections of the wheels.

The Outlander MAX 6x6 vehicles use an industry-exclusive, four-wheel independent rear suspension that eliminates scrub and camber changes. The system was revised for 2019 to include all TTI updates, which were done to improve comfort and control. The wheels pivot up and down rather than in a butterfly motion. This ensures the vehicle moves only in the direction you point it and is designed to improve traction and optimize transfer of power to the ground. Offering five-way preload adjustable shocks and 9.9-inches (25.1 cm) of suspension travel, it can soak up rough terrain while keeping the rider comfortable and focused on the trail.

New front arched A-arms improve obstacle crossings, while the new sway bar enhances handling and cornering.
- 11 inches ground clearance
When combined with its impressive suspension travel, Visco-Lok QE and true 6x6 capabilities, the 11 inches (28 cm) of ground clearance on the Outlander MAX 6x6 XT 1000 makes conquering rugged terrain a snap.
- Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) G2 Frame
