Usually we wait until mid May to crest the higher elevations in our off-road toys. But this year we put the snowmobiles away early and ventured up Fall Creek, along the Camp Creek trail, to Skyline Ridge in eastern Idaho.
With the low snow year and warm temperatures, most of the trail was dry ... even the usually swampy spring crossings. But there were patches of snow in the trees. And one particular patch where we crest out of Camp Creek and on top of Skyline Ridge proved to be a major obstacle for us on this particular day.
We were testing two uniquely different vehicles: a Polaris Ace and the Arctic Cat Wildcat. The Ace is small and perhaps under-powered for flying down the road. But it is a blast to ride and does surprisingly well at keeping pace with the Wildcat. The Wildcat has a better suspension and much more power, but when it gets stuck, it can be a handful to get out.
