Elko, Nevada — Nevada Outdoor School invites Elko’s youths to a summer of adventure in their own hometown.
“Some of the biggest Elko programs are starting soon,” said Executive Director Andy Hart.
“Our programming relies a lot on engaging multiple intelligences,” he said. “Kids may have different preferences. We want to make sure every child that attends has great memories.”
Hart also encouraged Elko youths to take advantage of Nevada Outdoor School’s summer programs.
The All Terrain Vehicle Rider Camp is scheduled for July 15-17. Activities will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. each day. It will take place at the Train Park in Elko. This camp is open to children ages 6-11.
The first two days of the program will focus on teaching children safe and responsible riding procedures and team building skills. On the third day, each child will be given the chance to take a hands-on rider course and earn ATV safety certification.
“This program is appropriate for youth who currently ride ATVs and those just interested in outdoor activities,” Hart said.
While the term “ATV” is used to describe a wide range of vehicles, Hart and Director of Programming Jessica Snaman noted that the vehicles used in the program are small four wheelers. They further added that children would not be required to ride the vehicles if they did not feel comfortable.
“All the camps encourage campers to try new experiences in a safe and supportive environment,” Hart said. “We encourage kids to try new things, but we never force them.”
No matter which camp a child chooses to attend, the ultimate goal is to generate interest in outdoor activities while building friendships.
“We really want to be that spark or that inspiration to find what they love about the outdoors and go after it,” Hart said. “Why be bored this summer when you can have a little adventure?”
The ATV Riders Camp and the Girls’ Adventure Camp cost $35 each to attend. Families with two or more children will pay the full price for the first child, but receive a 50 percent discount on each additional child enrolled. Scholarships are available regardless of family size.
There is no other direct cost associated with either of these camps, but children will be expected to bring their own lunch and basic outdoor supplies such as a bottle of water and sunscreen. Parents will be provided with a complete list of supplies soon after enrollment.
