What Would You Do To Your SxS If You Had $1,000

We ask the experts for suggestions

Published in the August 2013 Issue August 2013 Powersport News Tyrell Marchant

What would you do if you suddenly found yourself with an extra $1,000? If you’re like us, your plans would likely include your ATV or side-by-side. And while it’s certainly not every day any of us happens upon a thousand bucks, we set out to find out what we could do if we did. With the help of some expert dealers in the business, we got some pretty good ideas as to what a thousand bucks could do to customize a stock vehicle.

We found out pretty quickly that a thousand bucks really doesn't go far when it comes to accessories. However, as we approached the dealers, we asked how we could maximize our money and the most for what money we have.

In this issue we'll cover Polaris, Can-Am and Arctic Cat. We'll highlight other manufacturers' in upcoming issues of Dirt Toys.

Polaris

Action Motor Sports

Idaho Falls, ID

Joe McKnight at Action told us that the RZR and RZR XP are by far their most popular units (no surprise there), so that’s what we focused on. We were given plenty of options, but here are our favorites:

We’re not ones to complain, but sometimes it’s nice when you’re out tearing up a trail to have a little protection from the elements. For keeping the sun off your neck and the dust out of your eyes and mouth, we came up with this package:

Polaris factory RZR roof: $349.99

  • Brushed aluminum
  • Stainless steel mounting brackets for easy installation and removal

Half windshield: $129.99

  • Provides protection from wind, dust and debris
  • Durable polycarbonate construction
  • Lip on top edge to deflect airflow
  • Works with any Polaris factory roof

Doors, Starting Line Products: $395

  • Strong, lightweight powdercoated steel tube frame
  • Lightweight plastic skin that doesn’t dent easily
  • Spring-loaded double catch interior latch assembly for easy access

Labor: $60-$100

McKnight said that any and all of these add-ons can be easily self-installed but noted that Action is willing to charge relatively little for labor if a customer spends this kind of money. Depending on your own local dealer, a self-install job may or may not be worth it.

Total package price: $934.98-$974.98

If you’re more about performance than comfort and aesthetics and if, like us, you like to take your RZR out on the rocks, $1,000 will get you well on your way to having one of the most rock-ready rides out there.

Pit Bull radial tires: $649

  • Aggressive tread
  • Six-ply construction; stock tires are four-ply
  • The slightly less aggressive but Sedona Ripsaw sells for $495 a set and still does great on the rocks.

Two-inch lift: $150 installed

  • Another possible self-install to provide needed extra clearance in the rocks and brush.

SLP Rocker Armor skid plate: $299

  • High-tensile steel
  • Wheel well-to-wheel well protection

Total package price: $1,098 with Pit Bull tires; $944 with Ripsaw tires

Can-Am

SK Northwest

Portland, OR

When we talked to SK Northwest in Portland, they chose to focus on the Can-Am Commander. Here’s the thousand-dollar package they suggested:

Sport roof: $499.99

  • Can-Am’s economy roof for protection against the elements
  • Thermoformed TPO construction
  • Easy assembly and installation

Half windshield: $209.99

  • Durable polycarbonate construction for better impact resistance than acrylic windshields
  • Reverse angle lip to deflect airflow
  • Non-yellowing, non-cracking and UV-resistant
  • Quick-attach brackets for fast, tool-less installation and removal

Radiator grill: $64.99

  • Black epoxy electrocoated metal shield
  • Mounts over radiator face to give protection from rocks, branches and other debris
  • Fits all Commander 2011 and new models

Roof accessory and light wiring kit: $79.99

Hella halogen lights: $169.99 for 2-pack

  • Delivers long range illumination
  • 3.25-inch clear glass lens and swivel mounting heavy-duty bracket
  • Includes basic wiring and switch
  • Works with halogen and/or HID lights separately or in combination without overloading your charging system
  • Can be installed on Can-Am’s front accessory bar, XT front bumper or Xtreme bumper

Total package price: $1,024.95

Arctic Cat: AZ West, Lake Havasu City, AZ
