OUR REPORT:
These are unique foot pegs. Not just that they are machined from a block of billet aluminum rather than welded together from steel. But because the EXT version of the Fastway Air foot peg has an angled tail piece that kind of hangs back to support your foot as it rolls back on the foot peg.
It’s a collaboration between Fastway and Ankle Savers. Kind of a 5th-generation version of a foot peg that prevents your ankle from rolling off the back of the peg so far that it could pose an injury.
Sure, they look odd at first. And they seem like they might be heavy. And they might seem like they would catch on rocks and get in the way.
Here’s what we’ve found.
Weight. They Air EXT pegs are actually kind of light. Not titanium light, which is in the same price range, but lighter than a lot of oversized steel pegs. Each peg weighs less than half a pound.
Catching on stuff. They don’t. We’ve ridden hours of rocky trails, logs, over willows, through creeks, plowed through sagebrush and bogged through mud. They don’t hang up on stuff.
Comfort. We have to point out that we have ran the standard Fastway Air foot pegs on four previews bikes. We were going to run the standard pegs again on our 2016 Beta 300 RR Race Edition. When we were adding pegs to the cart, we thought “Why not try the EXT?” So we did.
The Air EXT will feel the same as the standard peg for 80 percent of your riding. That other 20 percent of the time is awesome. It’s quite reassuring to drop the front wheel off a big rock and have your feet on solid support rather than hanging on the edge of a few spikes. The piece of mind is pretty valuable.
Traction. We don’t love the F3 hex key threaded inserts that come with the pegs. They’re a little slick. Our favorite setup is to buy a pack of the pointed F6 cleats and run those on the outer edges with the standard F3 cleats in the middle and on the EXT platform.
Height. The main reason we’ve run the Fastway pegs on previous bikes was because they have adjustable height. We run them in the lowered position for “tall dude” rider ergos. Half an inch goes a long way when you’re over 6 ft tall.
IF WE COULD SUGGEST IMPROVEMENTS:
They’re expensive. Would be nice if the Fit Kit was included in the price.
DIRT TOYS RATING:
THE DIRT:
For motocross, go ahead and get yourself some titanium shark-toothed boot shredders. But if you’re an enduro rider like us, these pegs are awesome.
