2013 Can-Am Outlander 650 X mr

September 2012 Powersport News

The all-new Can-Am Outlander 650 X mr is the newest hero ATV for mud-riding enthusiasts, fusing proven design elements from the Outlander 650, the award-winning 1000 X mr and some specialty components of its own.

The Outlander 650 X mr, which features a 51-inch wheelbase and Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) G2 frame and chassis, will attract plenty of attention with a more compact design, mud-specific engineering and overall skill set. Using principles of design Can-Am calls Geometric Contact Control, BRP engineers designed the Surround Spar Technology chassis to be able to deliver the hardcore performance the Can-Am brand is known for, yet enhance the overall comfort of the vehicle at all levels of riding.

Diehard mud-riding enthusiasts can go straight from the showroom to frolicking at mud-riding parks and tackling trails with confidence. The addition of Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) and Visco-Lok QE adds another level of superiority.

The robust 62 hp 650cc Rotax V-Twin engine provides generous power for clawing through murky mud pits or throttling down a trail. A larger radiator sits in place of a front rack, so it's as high on the ATV as possible and out of the mud and water for optimal temperature control. The CVT intake, CVT exhaust and engine air intake are also located as high as possible in the machine (in a snorkel-like setup) to keep mud and water out of important components to ensure the X mr keeps churning even in the worst conditions.

New 28-inch Maxxis mud-specific tires, on 12-inch cast-aluminum wheels, feature an aggressive tread design for superior traction. The Outlander 650 X mr is completed with X-package graphics, aluminum foot pegs and preload-adjustable mud shocks.

The 650 X mr is every bit as tough and polished as the big-bore 1000 X mr, but its ability to seamlessly cross over from the mud to the trails adds to its versatility and makes it a whole new breed in the industry.

Can-Am Outlander 650 X mr Features and Benefits

PERFORMANCE

62-hp Rotax V-Twin 650

Revised for 2013, the 650cc liquid-cooled Rotax V-Twin powerplant now produces 62 horsepower and can easily outperform competitive 700cc-class models. With an unmatched power-to-weight ratio and electronic fuel injection (46mm throttle body), the single overhead cam engine is efficient, imposing and invigorating. Regardless of temperature or altitude, EFI ensures optimal performance from the engine at all times.

The Rotax engine remains controllable and offers useable power for a wide array of riders and situations. Progressive throttle control means the power remains manageable in slow-speed mud crawls or in faster paced trail runs.

Dual-room, No-tools Air Box

The Outlander 650 air box is placed at a higher and more centralized location for filtering and processing air. The no-tools air box features a dual-room design that improves the air filtration process and the quality of air by capturing dirty air in one portion of the box and clean air in another section before it sends the air to the engine. The air intake is also higher in the frame to improve the machine's capabilities in the mud and water.

Accessing the filter for maintenance and inspection only requires the removal of the seat, console plastic and exterior push plate. The air filter is securely attached to the air box housing with a screw-on system and push plate that work in tandem to create a tight seal.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with engine braking

BRP has made sure that critical components like the CVT intake, CVT exhaust and engine intake are located as high as possible on the ATV. They are placed high in front of the handlebars and above the muddy, wet conditions below. The CVT cover features a secure 13-bolt system for an improved seal. The cover has an easily accessible drain plug if the need ever arises to remove water from the CVT housing. Automatic transmission with standard engine braking featuring high, low, park, neutral and reverse is also included.

Large, Relocated Radiator

Located in place of the front rack, the Can-Am Outlander X mr's radiator is kept out of the mud and wears a protective, vented cover, ensuring all-day rides in the deep goop. The large, efficient radiator offers around 22 kW of cooling capacity.

Large 5.4 gal (20.5 L) fuel tank

The Outlander has a capacity of 5.4 gallons (20.5 liters), which means one can ride longer and play harder.

HANDLING

Surrounding Spar Technology (SST G2) frame with Geometric Contact Control

The Outlander 650 X mr uses the next generation and industry-exclusive Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) G2 frame from BRP. Introduced in 2012 on the 800R and 1000 models, the welded-steel frame incorporated new processes and updated geometry for increased structural integrity, improved durability and precision handling. The more efficient SST design offers increased strength compared to a traditional tubular steel chassis, a lower center of gravity, better handling and requires far less components, materials and welds.

Double A-arm Front Suspension with Dive-control Geometry

The front suspension features a dive-control and anti-kickback geometry that positions the pivot points in space instead of simply adding stiffer shocks and springs. The geometry also inspires confidence-reducing kickback to the operator by locating the knuckle in the wheel. The 2013 650 X mr ATV uses five-way preload adjustable, mud-specific shocks that supply comfort both in the bog and on the trail. Front-end suspension travel is 9.0 inches (22.9 cm).

Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension

Unique to Can-Am and inspired by trophy trucks, the proven Torsional Trailing arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension offers increased rigidity, improved suspension travel at 9.3 inches (23.6 cm) and includes a removable external sway bar. The TTI, which offers up to 75 percent fewer moving parts than competitive systems, was designed to eliminate tire scrub and camber changes when the suspension moves up and down. This setup, which improves ride quality and suspension travel, keeps the ATV in a straight line and requires less steering adjustments than competitive models. Lower pivot points provide geometric squatting for improved traction and the transfer of power to the ground.

Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering (DPS)

The Dynamic Power Steering system on the Outlander 650 X mr has three separate selectable levels of steering assistance: Minimum, Medium or Maximum. DPS provides variable steering assistance no matter what mode is selected and is designed to offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed. This technology also includes a Direct Link setup that uses advanced magnetic field sensors for faster response to steering input than competitive technology, which then minimizes steering lag.

Less kickback and more trail feedback is supplied to the operator because of the 50:1 final gear ratio, which is the largest in the industry. A high-capacity 50-amp motor means the DPS will never fade with heavy use and all DPS-equipped models also come with the Visco-Lok QE.

Visco-Lok QE auto-locking front differential

The industry exclusive Visco-Lok QE progressively transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the gripping one-automatically with no buttons to push or levers to pull. The system also eliminates wheel hop and driveline wind-up so it remains transparent to the driver and extremely easy to steer. Visco-Lok QE can fully lock with no rev or speed limiter. All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration giving an even quicker engagement of the front differential, which remains vital for slow-speed, technical terrain.

214 mm ventilated disc brakes with hydraulic twin-piston calipers

The 2013 Outlander 650 X mr features outboard hydraulic disc brakes. The front setup uses large 214 mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers for superior stopping power. At the rear, the 650 X mr uses a single twin-piston caliper and 214 mm hydraulic disc brake that is located in the right, rear wheel. Braking is controlled by a single hand brake (controls front and rear) on the left side of the handlebars and a rear foot brake in the right floorboard (controls rear only).

12-in. (30.5cm) cast-aluminum wheels with machined finish

The center-less design reduces unsprung weight and offers improved strength. Durability was increased in strategic areas while excess material was eliminated in other spots to save weight.

28-inch (71cm) Maxxis Mudzilla Tires

The 28-in. Maxxis Mudzilla 6-ply tires were selected for their exceptional mud-friendly characteristics. Large lugs and an aggressive tread pattern are design to give maximum traction in the mud and a smooth ride to the next mud hole. Tire offers rim guard for improved wheel protection.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN

Stylish Design

The 2013 Outlander 650 X mr ATV mimics the larger Outlander 1000 and 800R models with its cutting-edge styling and aggressive and muscular sightlines. Specialty graphics and X package color scheme help the 650 X mr stand out in a crowd.

High-strength, multipurpose rear rack with LinQ quick-attach accessory system

The high-strength, reinforced composite rear rack has an integrated anti-skid surface and elevated ridges for improved cargo holding (rated at 200 lbs.). Predetermined "cutouts" add versatility and are for use with Can-Am's exclusive LinQ quick-attach accessory system, which is adaptable and customizable for various uses and products.

5.7-gal (21.4L) rear storage compartment

Just because it's made to perform in the mud, doesn't mean the Outlander 650 X mr ATV isn't versatile. A huge 5.7-gallon (21.4-liter) rear storage box offers industry-leading cargo capacity and is located beneath the rear cargo rack. This means you can place items in the water-resistant storage box even if the rear cargo rack is loaded.
