CPSC Safety Summit; Opportunity To Offer Comments

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is hosting an ATV Safety Summit. There will be panelists from a variety of backgrounds at the summit. Russ and Karen from NOHVCC will both be presenting during the summit as will many of the folks from SVIA.

 

For those people who are not able to attend the summit, there is an opportunity to comment.

 

As always, comments that support OHV recreation are always helpful, and usually are not plentiful. Send in comments about the positive things your state, clubs or organizations do to promote the safe and responsible use of Off-Highway Vehicles.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC, Commission, or we) is announcing its intent to hold a Summit on all-terrain vehicle (ATV) safety. The Summit will be held at the CPSC's headquarters in Bethesda, MD, on October 11 and 12, 2012. We invite interested parties to attend the Summit and to submit comments.

 

The Summit will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 11 and 12, 2012. Individuals interested in attending the Summit should register by Oct. 5, 2012. Register at http://www.cpsc.gov/meetingsignup.html and click on the link titled, ``ATV Safety Summit.''

 

Written comments must be received by Nov. 14, 2012. All comments must include the name of the agency plus Docket No. CPSC-2012-0048. Choose one of the following methods for written submission:

The topics for the Summit will focus on the overall theme: "Keeping Families Safe on ATVs". There are six topic areas that will be addresses:

 

Rulemaking Topic Areas

 

1.                  Vehicle Characteristics 
Vehicle lighting (brake lights and head lights); 
Age categories; 
Speeds and transmission for youth ATVs-user acceptance and user abilities; and 
Physical sizing of ATVs

2.                  Consumer Awareness 
Point-of-purchase information; and 
On-product warning labels and hang tags

 

ATV Innovations Topic Areas

1.         State Legislation: Effecting Change 
How to effect change; 
What works, what doesn't? and 
*Successes and failures with other outdoor products

2.         ATV Training: Reaching the Next Generation 
Increasing availability; 
Using new technology; and 
*What works, what doesn't?

3.         Public Awareness, Information, and Education: Speaking With One Voice 
What works, what doesn't? and 
Cultural and social media challenges to promoting safe riding

4.         Vehicle Technology Innovations 
*Any new innovation-from the proof-of concept stage or current in-use on ATVs-to advances in the area of lateral stability and rollover protection
