Today was a day for exploring—a little more than we expected/planned for—but so much fun anyway.
We decided to take on the Seven Mile Rim Trail north of Moab today and because it was such a great day for riding (about 65-70 degrees F), we decided to take some side roads and see more sights.
“Official” mileage estimates put the Seven Mile Trail as about 13-15 miles. By the time we got back to the truck the odometer read 28.1 miles.
We loved seeing the La Sal Mountains, Arches National Park, the vast desert and amazing rock formations from the rim high above the valley. We stopped to see the Uranium Arch, blazed towards Merrimac and Monitor buttes and had a great time on the tippy section right before Wipeout Hill. We watched a Jeep take on Wipeout Hill, which is so steep it’s amazing any vehicle can descend and ascend that spot.
On our way back north we dropped into Tusher Wash and when we got to Mill Canyon Road, decided to head west to Tusher Tunnel and take in that amazing natural feature. After that stop, we took some side roads (the BLM sign said “3D” but we’re not sure what the trail name is.
While Seven Mile Rim is labeled as “extreme” or “difficult,” we found our Honda Pioneer 1000 worked like a champ. We tackled most of the obstacles on the trail (except Wipeout Hill) and the Pioneer crawled right up and over the rocks and ledges.
We tried our new Bell Helmet (www.bellhelmets.com) today (look for a review shortly) and a product called a Phoozy (www.phoozy.com), which we’ll also have a full review on.
Tomorrow we’ll take on another trail near Moab. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it.
